Vol. 119 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Limerick Housing Schemes.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state how many sites for labourers' cottages were in possession of the Limerick County Council on January 1st, 1948, how many such sites have since been secured, and how many cottages are in course of erection.

Twenty-six sites were in the possession of the county council on January 1st, 1948. Four hundred and eighty-two additional sites have since been secured. There are 228 cottages at present in course of erection.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state how many labourers' cottages were built by the Limerick County Council in each of the years 1932 to 1949, inclusive.

The information requested will, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, be circulated in the Official Report.

The number of labourers' cottages completed during each of the calendar years 1932-49 was as follows: 1932, nil; 1933, 4; 1934, 23; 1935, 103; 1936, 263; 1937, 309; 1938, 217; 1939, 97; 1940, 195; 1941, 128; 1942, 9; 1943, 20; 1944, 10; 1945, nil; 1946, nil; 1947, nil; 1948, nil; 1949, 68.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state the reason for the delay in providing a housing scheme for Mungret, County Limerick, and the present position regarding this scheme.

I understand that the delay in providing a housing scheme for Mungret is due to the difficulty in acquiring a suitable site in or immediately adjoining the village. The council are at the moment negotiating for the purchase of a site and if it is acquired there should be no delay in preparing a scheme for that area.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware that the 12 houses in course of erection at Abbeyfeale by the Limerick County Council will be altogether inadequate to meet the acute demand for such houses in the town and whether he will undertake to have the housing position there further examined with a view to having a further scheme started as soon as possible.

The 12-house scheme now in course of erection was calculated to meet the housing needs of Abbeyfeale, according to the survey carried out by the Limerick County Council in 1944. I understand that a fresh survey of the needs of all areas in County Limerick is now in progress. The question whether additional houses are needed in Abbeyfeale can be considered by the county council when the results of that survey are available.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware that the four houses about to be erected by the Limerick County Council in Athea village will be entirely inadequate to meet the demand for such houses in the village, and whether he will undertake to have the position further examined with a view to having an additional housing scheme started there as soon as possible.

The four-house scheme for Athea was calculated to meet the housing needs of the town according to the survey carried out by the county council in 1944. I understand, however, that a fresh survey of the housing needs of the county is at present in progress. The question whether additional houses are needed in Athea can be considered by the county council when the results of that survey are available.
