Vol. 119 No. 13

Written Answers. - Clonsast Turf Production.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state (i) the total quantity of machine-won turf produced on Clonsast bog in 1949; (ii) the quantity delivered, and awaiting delivery, to the power station at Portarlington; (iii) the quantity available for sale to institutions, industrial concerns and private persons, and (iv) whether in the coming season such turf will be available for sale to industrial concerns and private persons, etc.

I am informed by Bord na Móna that the total quantity of machine-won turf produced at Clonsast in 1949 was approximately 100,000 tons; the quantity delivered to the power station at Portarlington up to the 9th March, 1950, inclusive, was 30,500 tons and the quantity awaiting delivery at that date was approximately 40,000 tons. The quantity available for sale to institutions, industrial concerns and private firms at present is estimated at 10,000 tons and this turf is available for sale and is in course of being sold to industrial concerns and private persons, etc.

Before the Order of Business is announced, I desire to give notice of my intention to raise the subject-matter of Question No. 50 on the Adjournment to-night.

Deputy Dunne has already given notice to raise the subject-matter of Question No. 23.

I should like to join in the queue as regards Question No. 71.

We are taking Question No. 23 in the name of Deputy Dunne.

If the Deputy does not go ahead with his question, what then?

That is a matter which will have to be considered.
