Vol. 120 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Refuse Collection.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware of the hardship inflicted on Dublin housewives and of the danger to public health involved in the failure of the Dublin Corporation to collect bins and refuse not less than twice a week, and whether he is prepared to urge upon the corporation the urgent necessity for remedying this position.

This is a matter for the Dublin Corporation who have, I understand, on a number of occasions examined very fully the question of the frequency of collections. Their conclusion has been that the present system deals adequately with the quantity of refuse to be collected and that they would not be justified in increasing the frequency of collections in view of the heavy additional charge on the rates which such increase would entail.

Will the Minister indicate to the Dublin Corporation that considerations of economy should not affect them so far as the provision of necessary services of this nature is concerned? Will he indicate to them further that nobody in Dublin agrees with the conclusion that the services are adequate?
