Vol. 120 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Improvement of County Mayo Road.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware that a new industry, concerned with the capture of basking sharks which is capable of giving considerable employment and was organised by local enterprise and financed by local people, has been started in Achill, and, if so, whether he will consider the making of a grant for the steamrolling of the road from Darby's Point to the main road in view of the fact that development of the industry is greatly handicapped by the existing condition of this road.

With your permission, Sir, I propose to take Questions 39 and 40 together. It is for the Mayo County Council to decide on the road works to be undertaken in the county. The council have already been notified of the grant allocations that will be available from the Road Fund for the coming financial year. It is understood that the council propose to apply a portion of the main road improvement grant to sections of the Ballycastle-Belmullet road.
