Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Canúintí i gCraoladh Gaeilge.

D'fhiafraigh

den Aire Poist agus Telegrafa an feasach dó gurb ionann agus canúnachas a chothú an nuacht i nGaeilge a bheith á craoladh i dtrí chanúintí; nach gnáthach leis na craolairí Gaeilge an téarmaíocht chéanna d'úsáid agus an bhféachfaidh sé chuige go ndéanfar caighdeánú maidir le meán craolta agus téarmaíocht.

I cannot agree that the broadcasting of the news in Irish in three dialects is equivalent to recognition of dialects in the sense of a preference for extreme dialectal differences. The news in Irish is intended primarily for Gaeltacht listeners and it must, therefore, be given in one or other of the three main dialects. Listeners in other areas would have reasonable cause for complaint if the broadcasts were always made in the dialect of a particular Gaeltacht.

The very complex question of the standardisation of Irish is not one proper to my Department. I might say, however, that no exaggeration of dialects is practised in the Irish news and the people who prepare the bulletins do their best to achieve some measure of standardisation in terminology.
