Vol. 120 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Flour Bleaching.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware that a bleaching substance is being used in the preparation of flour for bread and that there is a belief that this process is detrimental to the people's health; and, if so, whether he will consider the advisability of having the process discontinued.

It has been the practice of millers to use bleaching substances in the manufacture of flour. So far there is no conclusive evidence that the use of such materials is injurious to health. Arrangements have, however, been made by the Minister for Agriculture to have the matter investigated.

Will that inquiry extend to the manufacture of bread?

I think the inquiry will cover all aspects of the matter.
