Vol. 120 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unemployment Relief for Lusk and Swords.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he will provide a grant for the relief of unemployment at Lusk and Swords, County Dublin.

I am not aware of any reason why special measures should be taken for the relief of unemployment in Lusk and Swords.

As the Deputy is no doubt aware, employment schemes are intended mainly to provide employment for men who are applicants for unemployment assistance, and there has not recently been any significant increase in the number of men in this class in the areas referred to. I should add that in any case employment schemes are generally confined to the winter months, when unemployment may be expected to be at its worst.

Has the Parliamentary Secretary any figures of unemployment to back up that statement of his?

It appears that the number of persons on the unemployment assistance register in the Lusk and Swords areas is only 21 in all.

That figure does not reflect the true position. With your permission, Sir, I propose to raise the matter on the adjournment to-night.
