Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rural Electrification.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will indicate when it is hoped to reach the following areas in the rural electrification scheme (a) Kealkil, (b) Ballyderlihan, Schull, and (c) Barryroe.

I am informed by the Electricity Supply Board that an official canvass of an area in the Schull district is at present in progress and it is expected that the question of selecting this area for development can be considered towards the end of this year.

The board understand that a memorial for submission to them is being prepared by the residents in the Barryroe area and when this memorial is received an examination of the matter will be initiated.

No request from the residents of Kealkil for inclusion in the rural electrification scheme has been received by the board and the matter should be initiated by the submission of such a request, accompanied by a memorial from the householders who are willing to accept supply.

It has not been possible for the board to identify the Ballyderlihan area to which the Deputy refers.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will now state when it is expected that electric current will be extended by the Electricity Supply Board to the parishes of Lixnaw and Abbeydorney, County Kerry.

I am informed by the Electricity Supply Board that the Lixnaw area was recently considered for development, but that the fixed charge revenue in relation to the capital cost was not sufficiently high to justify its development at this stage, but that the area will be considered in competition with other areas from time to time.

As regards the Abbeydorney area, I am informed by the board that this area has been selected for development, but that owing to the large amount of other work in hand and in prospect, it is anticipated that erection of the network cannot be commenced before the autumn of this year.
