Vol. 120 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers. - Sugar Supplied to Hotels.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that there is grave dissatisfaction in regard to the quality of the sugar now supplied to hotels and catering establishments; and, if so, what action he proposes to take in the matter.

The answer to the first part of the question is in the negative, and the second part does not, therefore, arise.

Is the Minister aware that a type of imported sugar is being made available to hotel owners that has all the appearance of having been swept up off a dusty road? It is not at all suitable for use in any catering establishment. Would the Minister make inquiries about it?

Has the Deputy seen the sugar which he has described as looking as if it had been swept off a dusty road?

I wonder would the Deputy be pleased to give me particulars, as otherwise it is a rather scandalous statement to make.

I think it is true.

I want to be convinced of the truth and I suggest to the Deputy that, having made that statement publicly here in the House, he is in duty bound to corroborate it and to give to me, or to the sugar company, particulars which will enable us to have the matter investigated.
