Vol. 120 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Land Rehabilitation.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware that work under the land rehabilitation project is badly needed in certain areas in Donegal, for example, in the valleys of the River Deale and the Swilly Burn, but cannot be undertaken without some measure of arterial drainage; and if he will consider joint action with the land rehabilitation project to enable such potentially rich lands to be brought quickly into a productive state.

It has not been represented to me that work under the land rehabilitation project has been held up in County Donegal for the reason stated by the Deputy. The question of undertaking comprehensive arterial drainage works on river catchments in that county under the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945, will be considered in due course as part of the arterial drainage programme of the Commissioners of Public Works, but it is unlikely that any such works can be undertaken in the near future.
