Vol. 121 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Withdrawal of Unemployment Assistance.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will state whether a number of men in Kilmallock, County Limerick, were recently deprived of unemployment assistance for refusing to accept work offered them by the Department of Posts and Telegraphs at a rate of wages which they considered inadequate; and, if so, whether he is satisfied that the withdrawal of unemployment assistance from these men was justified in the circumstances.

Certain recipients of unemployment assistance in Kilmallock were offered employment by the Department of Posts and Telegraphs on the 3rd instant. The men refused the employment on the terms offered and payment of unemployment assistance was suspended pending a decision by a statutory officer to whom the applications were submitted, as to whether under the provisions of the Acts the conditions for payment of unemployment assistance continued to be fulfilled. On the facts the statutory officer determined that the applications should not be disallowed and the local officer at Kilmallock was accordingly instructed to resume payment of unemployment assistance.
