Vol. 121 No. 5

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Coolnagun Turf Workers.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that a number of men employed on a Bord na Móna building scheme at Coolnagun Bog, County Westmeath, from April to September, 1949, were paid only the same rate as turf workers, viz., 1/4 per hour, although they had to stamp wet-time cards which do not apply to turf workers and that a higher rate was paid by Bord na Móna for similar work on the Hill of Down Bog, County Meath; and, if so, if he will take the matter up with Bord na Móna with a view to the payment to the men concerned on the building scheme at Coolnagun Bog of the rate of wages to which they were entitled.

I have no function in the matter of the wages paid by Bord na Móna to its employees, but I understand from the board that any such questions are settled by the board in negotiation with the men or their representatives. I am not accordingly prepared to take up with the board the particular case referred to by the Deputy.
