Vol. 121 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Studdert Estate, County Clare.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state why the cottiers on the Studdert estate, Ballyhannon, Quin, and another cottier residing adjacent thereto, were not given cow plots in the recent division of that estate and if he will request the Land Commission to provide for these people when the residue still on hands is being divided.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state why Mr. Patrick Reynolds, a married man with three children, whose grandfather was evicted from the lands of Ballyhannon, Quin, on the Studdert estate, was not provided for in the recent division of that estate and whether he will have his claim examined before the remainder of the land is allocated.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state what considerations induced the Land Commission to restrict to nine acres the allotment made to Mr. Martin Kelly, Ballyhannon, Quin, on the Studdert farm in that district, in view of the fact that Mr. Kelly was an employee on the farm who lost his position because of its division; that he is married and has four children and that the allotment made to him is totally inadequate for his needs and that, moreover, migrants are being provided with economic holdings and new houses on the estate.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state whether representations have been made to the Land Commission respecting allotments on the Studdert farm, Ballyhannon, Quin, County Clare, by Messrs. Patrick Reynolds, John Doyle, Thomas Doherty and Martin Kelly, of Ballyhannon, Quin, County Clare; and Messrs. Daniel Kilmartin, John Heffernan and Patrick Conroy, of Ardsolus, Quin, County Clare; and if he will indicate what considerations induced the Land Commission to reject these applications whilst considering favourably other applications which were not nearly as well grounded.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I will take together Questions Nos. 10, 11, 12 and 13 which all refer to the Studdert estate.

I am satisfied that the Land Commission selected the allottees for this estate with their customary care and fairness. The applicants mentioned in the questions were fully considered.

Is the Minister satisfied that a man who loses his employment because of the division of an estate and then gets nine acres is suitably provided for by the Land Commission?

I presume the Deputy's supplementary refers to Martin Kelly.

That is clearly set out in my question.

He was not an employee of the estate at the time the Land Commission took over. He may have been in the employment of the second last owner, but he was not in the employment of the estate at the time proceedings were instituted or when the estate was taken over.

Is the Minister satisfied that nine acres are sufficient to give that man an economic holding, when he is bringing people in from outside and building houses for them, while Kelly is a native of the district?
