Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Farm Buildings Scheme in Galway.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state the number of inspectors engaged in County Galway on the farm buildings scheme and the annual rate of remuneration, including travelling expenses, in respect of each inspector.

The answers to the Deputy's inquiries are as follows:—

The outdoor inspectorial staff engaged in County Galway on the farm buildings scheme consists of 35 officers. These comprise agricultural overseers, assistant agricultural overseers and farm building supervisors, who are paid as follows: Agricultural overseers, £435-£550; assistant agricultural overseers, £265-£435. (One of the assistant agricultural overseers, who is employed in a purely temporary capacity, is paid at the rate of £5 a week.) Farm buildings supervisors, £5 19s. 0d. a week.

The usual travelling expenses generally applicable in the Civil Service appropriate to their grades are allowed in the case of the agricultural overseers. Of the other grades, that is, assistant agricultural overseers and farm buildings supervisors, all, with the exception of a few who are authorised in special circumstances of age or health to use cars for official travelling are granted a commuted cycling allowance at the rate of £16 per annum.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state (a) the number of applications received from County Galway under the farm buildings scheme; (b) the number inspected; (c) the number sanctioned; (d) the number awaiting inspection; (e) the number of grants already paid, and the total amount of such grants.

Up to and including the 2nd June, 3,589 applications under the farm buildings scheme had been received from County Galway. Inspections have been carried out in 2,836 cases and all these have been sanctioned; 753 cases have yet to be inspected; 310 applicants have completed the works that they were authorised to carry out and grants amounting to £4,695 18s. 0d. have been paid to them.
