Vol. 122 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Lands for Afforestation.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state now what progress, if any, has been made towards the acquisition of lands for afforestation purposes in the Gaeltacht and congested areas of West Donegal and when afforestation work is likely to commence.

Forestry records do not distinguish between East and West Donegal. Eighteen offers of land in the county were recently inspected and are at present under consideration. It is not possible to state when afforestation work will commence.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state the area of land acquired for afforestation purposes in West Limerick, naming the townlands and electoral divisions.

As forestry records do not distinguish between East and West Limerick, I will give the details for the entire county in the form of a tabular statement which, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to have circulated in the Official Report.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state (1) what steps have been taken to make a survey of the lands offered for afforestation in South Kerry; (2) whether the key centres for the area have been yet decided on and, if so, how many and where they are situated; (3) whether any one of those centres has been yet fully developed, and (4) when the forestry scheme is likely to be put into operation, even to a limited extent, in the South Kerry area.

County Kerry has been surveyed and most of the land offered for forestry purposes has been inspected. Forestry centres are in full operation at Killarney, Kenmare and Kilgarvan and negotiations are in progress for the purchase of key areas with a view to establishing further centres at Castleisland and Lickeen.

The expansion of existing centres and establishment of additional centres are entirely dependent on the availability of suitable land for purchase.
