Vol. 122 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Calinafercy Sea Embankments.

Mr. Flynn

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state the present position concerning the repair of sea embankments at Calinafercy West, Marshall estate, County Kerry.

I wish to refer the Deputy to my reply of 13th June last to a similar question regarding this embankment.

The occupiers of the lands affected recently offered to contribute towards the cost of repairs. Their offer falls far short of the contribution required and is not acceptable.

Is the Minister aware that the lands down there have been regularly flooded every year for a number of years? Is he further aware that the people living there are not in a position to pay the levy suggested and, in view of their extenuating circumstances, will he reconsider this matter?

While the demand from the Department might be considered by the tenants as fairly high, on the other hand the offer made by the tenants themselves was ridiculously small. Perhaps the Deputy——

Will strike a bargain?

——could induce those people to increase their offer? It must be within their power to do better than they have offered.
