Vol. 122 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Donegal Telephone Congestion.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether he is aware of the heavy volume of telephonic communication on the lines within County Donegal and the consequent long intervals between call and connection, and if he will arrange for the much overdue provision of additional telephone circuits so as to relieve the present congestion and long delays on the lines.

I am aware that in County Donegal, as in other parts of the country, delay is experienced in making trunk telephone calls, because the number of trunk circuits between many places is insufficient for the volume of calls offered. Additional circuits are being provided in the order of greatest need.

A circuit has recently been provided between Milford and Downings, and it is hoped to provide circuits between Lifford-Ballybofey and Carndonagh-Moville in this year's programme.

Is the Minister aware that the area in which I am interested is an area in West Donegal where the telephone congestion has been very bad for the past 12 months and is worsening as time goes on—that is, the Dungloe-Burtonport area?

We are providing additional circuits as fast as we possibly can.
