Vol. 122 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Logainmneacha.

D'fhaifraí

den Aire Airgeadais conas atá an scéal i láthair na huaire maidir le Coimisiúin na Logainmneacha.

There has been no change in the position in regard to the Place Names Commission since the Government decided as an economy measure to suspend the activities of a number of commissions of which the Place Names Commission is one. The director of the commission and his assistant continue to be employed in a full-time capacity and are at present engaged on a compilation of lists of place names.

Is this economy measure related to the extinction of cultural activity upon which the Government are at present engaged?

That cultural activity has lain dormant for quite a number of the years during which the Deputy was in control, and there is not much harm being done by leaving it over for another year or two.

Was this not the only thing that the Minister struck at as an economy measure?

It was not—there were others.

That is a different question. I think the Deputy will agree that this has lain for many years without getting any treatment by the Government that was in office.

It was established and it was to complete its work in five years.

No, it was established after three years, after a great deal of thought was given to it. There was a postponement and I am only taking over the postponement period for a little longer.
