Vol. 122 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rents of Cork Corporation Houses.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will indicate the full economic rent of the 90 houses built at Cathedral Road, Cork, and the 23 houses at Fuller's Road, Cork, (2) the rents charged by the corporation in each case, and (3) the maximum rents which could have been charged so as to enable the corporation to receive the full benefits of the grants from the Transition Development Fund.

As the reply includes a tabular statement, I propose, with your permission, a Chinn Chomhairle, to circulate it with the Official Report.

Following is the reply:—

The reply to the first two parts of the Deputy's question is as follows:—

Scheme

Full economic rent (inclusive of rates)

Rents charged by the Corporation (inclusive of rates)

(1)

(2)

90 houses at Cathedral Rd.

31/9d. for 5 roomed house.

25/- for 5 roomed house.

30/3d. for 4 roomed house.

21/- for 4 roomed house.

23 houses at Fuller's Rd.

32/7d. (average figure for four and five roomed houses).

25/- for 5 roomed house. 21/- for 4 roomed house.

With regard to (3) I would point out that grants from the Transition Development Fund are conditional inter alia on a reasonable contribution being made from the rates towards the annual outgoings and on the rents charged being reasonable having regard to the ability of the tenants to pay. It should not be assumed that maximum grants from the fund would be available by reason of the fact that a local authority may fix rents on levels determined with the object of receiving maximum grants. I have not the particulars which would enable me to furnish the Deputy with a reply to this part of the question.
