Vol. 122 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Provision of Water Schemes.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will now state what steps are being taken to provide a water scheme for Ballyhooly, County Cork.

The Cork County Council have invited tenders for the carrying out of this work.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state the cause of the prolonged delay in carrying out the new and urgent water scheme for Cahirciveen, County Kerry, and whether the local authority will select a contractor for the work in the usual way.

Approval was given last August to the invitation of tenders for the carrying out of the Cahirciveen water supply improvement scheme.

Following on the receipt of 11 tenders, the Kerry County Council, at a meeting held in April last, passed a resolution recommending the acceptance of a tender which was not the lowest, but at a further meeting held on the 12th ultimo, the council decided to readvertise for tenders.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware that a list of very necessary water and sewerage schemes for towns and villages in South Kerry was submitted by the county medical officer of health to the local authority which failed to make any financial provision this year for the carrying out of any of these schemes, and whether he will take vigorous action to prevent a recurrence of such failures in order to protect the health of the people and improve sanitary conditions in the area.

I understand that the council at their estimates meeting considered the proposals prepared by the county medical officer for the extension of water and sewerage schemes and for the provision of pumps and that they did not provide any moneys for the carrying out of such works.

The fact that no money has been provided in the Estimate would not preclude the council from proceeding with the preparation of major works, as it it is unlikely that any expenditure in respect of them would come in course of discharge in the present financial year. I shall continue to impress on the local authority the desirability of determining a reasonable programme of such works for execution over a period of two or three years and of concentrating on the bringing of the programme so determined to fruition. Waterville sewerage scheme is in course of preparation and the county council have submitted proposals for the appointment of consultants to prepare water supply schemes at Dungeagan, Ballinskelligs, Farranfore, Milltown, Annascaul, Ballyheighe, Fenit, Newtownsandes and Tarbert, as well as sewerage schemes for Annascaul, Ballyheighe, Ballybunion, Ballylongford, Brosna, Sneem, Milltown and Rathmore. The Department has suggested that the appointments should be limited to the schemes likely to be carried out within a period of two to three years and it is understood that the manager is reconsidering the matter accordingly.
