Vol. 123 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Warble-Fly Damage.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware that considerable losses are suffered by persons who sell cattle hides owing to depreciation in value caused by the warble-fly and if he will introduce a scheme to provide for the dressing of cattle at suitable times so as to ensure that good quality leather can be provided from undamaged hides.

I am aware that depreciation in the value of hides is caused by warble-fly infestation. I do not propose to introduce any scheme involving compulsory measures for the treatment of infested cattle. Farmers will, I am sure, adopt as a routine measure the treatment of all infested cattle with the dressing materials now available, provided that the trade interests who benefit thereby recompense them for the trouble and expense involved.
