Vol. 123 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Day-Old Chicks Subsidy.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is now in a position to extend the subsidy for the sale of day-old chicks to applicants residing in all congested areas in South Kerry.

I take it that the Deputy's question refers to the special scheme whereby poultry-keepers in certain Gaeltacht areas are enabled to obtain up to four dozen pure-bred Rhode Island Red chicks at 2/6 per dozen. I do not propose to extend this scheme in the coming season beyond the areas of operation already fixed. In all other areas poultry-keepers benefit by the general subsidy scheme under which pure-bred chicks can be purchased at 5/- to 8/- per dozen less than the price they would otherwise have to pay.
