Vol. 123 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Currency Applications.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the number of applications for currency made by persons going to Rome from 24th December, 1949, to date.

Statistics in regard to applications for exchange facilities for foreign travel are compiled by reference to currency areas. Accordingly it is not possible to segregate the cases relating to travel to Rome from those relating to travel to other parts of Italy.

On the basis of returns furnished by banks and authorised travel agencies the total number of applications for currency made by persons travelling to Italy in the period 24th December, 1949, to 14th October, 1950, was 20,750 approximately. Returns, however, in respect of recent weeks are outstanding from a number of travel agencies. The actual total, therefore, for the period referred to is somewhat higher than the figure quoted.
