Vol. 123 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kerry Slate Quarries

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state whether a survey has yet been made of the Kilcummin district near Killarney, where slate quarries exist; and, if so, what are the possibilities of their development.

A survey of the slate quarries at Kilcummin, Killarney, was made some years ago and I am advised that these quarries do not offer reasonable prospects for commercial development.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state (1) whether, when and by whom an inspection was made of the slate quarries at Dohilla, Tinnies Upper and Cooleast, Valentia Island; (2) whether a report has been submitted for consideration and what action is likely to be taken in the matter, and (3) whether the geological survey has been extended to other areas in South Kerry with a view to the development of their mineral resources, if any; and, if so, the result of the survey.

An inspection of the slate quarries at Dohilla, Tinnies Upper and Cooleast, Valentia Island, was made in May, 1950, by an officer of the Geological Survey and the report is under consideration. A survey of other mineral deposits in South Kerry shows that they do not offer scope for commercial development.
