Vol. 123 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Howth Main Drainage.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state whether steps have been taken to commence work on the Howth main drainage scheme which is essential for the proper development of the north side of Dublin City.

Every effort is being made to expedite the commencement of work on this scheme. A public inquiry was held early this year following which approval was given to the proposed method of construction so far as the area from Finglas Bridge to Raheny was concerned. This section can proceed, with a temporary outfall if necessary. A contract has been entered into for the manufacture of the pipes required for this work and the detailed plans are at present being prepared. At the same time, it was suggested to the Dublin Corporation that consideration might be given to the possibility of adopting an alternative method of construction from Raheny to Howth. Examination of this alternative involved considerable survey and investigation, but the report of the corporation's engineers has now been received in the Department and is being examined.
