Vol. 123 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Postal Voters.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware that postal voters were precluded from exercising the franchise in the recent local government elections; and, if so, whether he will take steps, if necessary by the introduction of proposals for legislation, to remedy this situation.

Apart from Seanad elections, voting by post is confined to members of the Defence Forces voting in an election on the Dáil franchise. This enables serving members of the Defence Forces to vote at Presidential and Dáil elections and at a referendum. There is no provision for postal voting at local government elections.

The possibility of extending the facility of postal voting will be examined in connection with the proposed revision and consolidation of the electoral law.
