Vol. 123 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Stocks of Honey.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware that import licences for the importation of honey from abroad have been issued notwithstanding the fact that there are ample stocks of native honey available and whether he is further aware that, by letter dated July 17th last, his Department was informed by the secretary of the Wexford Bee Keepers' Association of the availability of any necessary reserves of honey, and whether he will in the circumstances take forthwith such steps as are necessary to protect the interests of the native producers.

I am not so aware. No licences are necessary for the importation of honey but a customs duty of 1/- per lb. has to be paid.

The letter of the 17th July last referred to in the question was received and duly acknowledged.

I understand an export market is available where run honey and section honey is saleable at remunerative prices, and this, with the home market, can absorb all available supplies.
