Vol. 123 No. 8

- Seaweed and Sand Restrictions.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that farmers in County Cork are being prevented from drawing seaweed and sand from the foreshore and whether, having regard to the importance of these fertilisers to the farmers concerned, he will take the matter up immediately with a view to the removal of the restriction.

I am not aware of the circumstances referred to in the question. Removals of beach material from below the high water mark on Stateowned foreshore are regulated by means of a licensing system under the Foreshore Act, 1933. Licences are freely granted unless there is grave danger of injury to adjoining lands. If the Deputy furnishes particulars of the cases he has in mind, I will have the matter examined. I would point out, however, that I have no function in regard to removals from foreshore which is not in State ownership, or from areas above high water mark.
