Vol. 123 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Local Appointments Commission Advertisements.

asked the Taoiseach if, where vacancies are advertised in respect of positions to be filled by the Local Appointments Commission, for which a knowledge of Irish is declared to be necessary, he will arrange that such vacancies will be advertised only in the Irish language.

It is, in fact, the practice of the Local Appointments Commissioners to advertise such posts in Irish only.

Is the Taoiseach not aware that a number of advertisements have appeared for positions in respect of which a knowledge of Irish was required to be a necessary qualification, and that such positions were advertised in English?

I am only aware of one, and that was by error. The error was corrected, and the advertisement was put in Irish afterwards. If the Deputy has any other information, I will have it looked into, but the facts are as I have stated. There is a practice, where a number of appointments are being advertised, to group them; the posts for which Irish is essential are given in the group advertisement in Irish only.
