Vol. 123 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Future of Great Northern Railway.

Mr. Byrne

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is now in a position to make an announcement on the future of the Great Northern Railway, and if he can assure the workers and shareholders that there will be no stoppage or loss of employment.

As the Deputy is aware, I had a further meeting with the Northern Minister of Commerce this week concerning the Great Northern Railway. The conference was adjourned after a lengthy discussion and it is hoped that the talks will be resumed in the very near future. I feel confident the House will appreciate that in the circumstances I am not yet in a position to make a statement but, as I have already stated in replies to previous questions on this matter, it is obvious that the future of the transport system in the area under the jurisdiction of this Government and our people therein cannot be a matter of indifference to the Government, and suitable steps will be taken to protect both of these vital interests of the country.
