Vol. 124 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Supply of in-Calf Heifers.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state when he proposes to implement his promise, made in reply to a question on 21st June last, to have a number of in-calf Kerry heifers supplied to the tenants of Arranmore Island, County Donegal.

In my reply to the Deputy's question of the 21st June last, to which he refers, I said that I had been considering a scheme for the introduction of Kerry cattle in certain selected areas of West Donegal where periodic shortages of milk were most acute and where enterprising farmers might be found willing to help in the experiment. I am now glad to say that it has been found possible to locate already eight in-calf Kerry heifers in the Carrick area. Six or seven such heifers will be sent to Arranmore Island as soon as safe transport conditions prevail, which is generally about mid-March, and the same number will be located in the Gweedore area.
