Vol. 124 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Land Rehabilitation Schemes in West Cork.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will indicate the present position of the land rehabilitation project in West Cork, giving the number of schemes (i) completed; (ii) in progress; (iii) being carried out by farmers, and (iv) being carried out by the Department.

I would refer the Deputy to a reply to a question from Deputy Maguire on the 7th March last in connection with statistics of progress under the land project. I undertook that comprehensive returns would be furnished periodically to Dáil Éireann, and the Deputy will recollect that two such returns have been supplied, the latest in November last. A further return is under preparation and will be available to Deputies within the next few weeks. I trust that this return will give the Deputy the information he requires. If it does not I will have the Deputy supplied with whatever supplementary information he may require.

Would the Minister make an effort to have the information sought by me made available at the earliest possible moment in order to check a rumour disseminated that his Department are refusing to deal with the problems of carrying out the work themselves?

Will the Minister say if the officials employed under the scheme are doing anything other than making returns to his Department?

The Deputy will have heard an echo from across the House of a rumour that is troubling us, but it is not the first rumour. We trod on them all and will live.

What about the 19th January, 1948?
