Vol. 124 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garden of Remembrance.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state when it is hoped to commence work on the Garden of Remembrance.

The Deputy will be aware from replies to previous questions on this subject that the site at the Rotunda Gardens, which was acquired for a Garden of Remembrance, was made available to the Rotunda Hospital authorities as a temporary measure for the purposes of an infant welfare unit; and he will appreciate that work on the Garden of Remembrance cannot be commenced on the site until that temporary user of it shall have ceased. Meanwhile, steps are being taken to have all work preparatory to the placing of contracts for the carrying out of the approved scheme put in hands, so that there may be no delay in proceeding with the work when the site becomes available.

Will the Parliamentary Secretary indicate to the House whether a firm decision has been taken by the Government in regard to the Garden of Remembrance, whether the plans have been completed, whether he will make them available in Leinster House so that we can inspect them, and whether it is hoped, or any examination has been made, to find an alternative site?

On the 29th December, 1950, the Government approved the design and the plans for the scheme and there will be no delay.

Those plans were three years old.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary answer my part of the supplementary question, as to whether he will make the plans available so that Deputies can inspect them to relieve our minds in that respect?

I will consider that.
