Vol. 124 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Supplies of Tinplate.

Mr. Byrne

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that the drastic cut in supplies of tinplate in the second quota period will result in the closing of canning factories engaged in home trade production, causing extensive unemployment and shortages of important canned foods and whether he will make strong representations, on ministerial level, to the British authorities, and open negotiations with the American authorities, for an increased quota.

I am aware of the difficulty regarding supplies of tinplate. The position of this and other metals in short supply is being actively considered at the moment.

Mr. Byrne

Will the Minister take steps to see that the industry will not have to curtail its employment because of the scarcity? Can he help them?

As I told the Deputy, the position is being actively investigated. I cannot at this stage give full information as to the supply position. Every effort will be made to secure adequate supplies.
