Vol. 124 No. 5

Ceisteanna.—Questions. Oral Answers. - Annual Arbor Week.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he is prepared to co-operate with the Trees for Ireland Committee in organising an annual arbor week, the first of which is to take place in the week commencing the 12th March next.

I have followed with the greatest of interest the formation and development of this committee as I am anxious to give the utmost encouragement to any such movement which tends to make the public forest conscious. I have no doubt that the atmosphere they are capable of creating would be of immense benefit as time goes on.

A committee such as this can do a vast amount of useful work provided they impart the necessary knowledge of correct methods of fencing and planting and by ensuring that the right species of tree is selected to suit the varying types of soil. These are three most important factors and the forestry staff of my Department will give all the technical advice and assistance that may be needed.
