Vol. 124 No. 5

Ceisteanna.—Questions. Oral Answers. - Telephone Services.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether he is aware of the urgent necessity for the extension of the telephone service from Killorglin to Cromane Post Office; and if he is now in a position to state when this essential service will be provided.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether he is aware that Meenbanaid Post Office, County Donegal, has no telephone facilities and if, in view of the fact that people in that area are very badly inconvenienced by the absence of telegraphic facilities, he will have a telephone installed in the near future.

With your permission, I propose to take Questions Nos. 37 and 40 together.

As I stated in reply to a similar question on the 14th instant, it is the intention of the Department to install a telephone in every post office. There are still over 700 post offices to be dealt with—most of them in remote areas—and the work will have to be spread over a number of years. In order that the best progress may be made, the order in which call offices are installed is determined mainly on engineering considerations.

It is not possible to say at present when call offices will be provided at Cromane or Meenbanaid.
