Vol. 124 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Síochána Reorganisation.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state the number of meetings held by the inter-departmental committee set up about a year ago to investigate the possibility of reorganising the Garda Síochána, whether they visited Garda centres all over the country and, if so, what centres and whether they paid visits to Britain and, if so, how many and for what purpose and when may it be expected that they will furnish their report to the Government.

The committee have held 40 meetings to date. Members of the committee visited Garda centres throughout the country. These centres included 12 divisional headquarters, 12 district headquarters and 34 sub-district stations. Members also went to Great Britain to examine the police organisation there, and visited five police forces in England and Scotland. I am not in a position to say when the committee's report will be available, but I expect that it will be furnished within three months.
