Vol. 125 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Profits on Building Requisites.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that with regard to many building requisites there are four separate profits added to the costs of production before such articles reach the consumer, by (a) the manufacturer; (b) the agent for the manufacturer; (c) the member of the Builders' Providers' Association, and (d) the retailer; and, if so, whether he will consider taking such steps as are necessary to have this whole question examined with a view to reducing the costs of building requisites.

So far as I am aware, some building requisites pass through the channels mentioned by the Deputy in the course of distribution. The question as to whether the recognised channels of distribution should be interfered with raises big issues and I do not consider that a special examination is called for in the case of building requisites.

In view of the building drive at present in progress, will the Minister not agree that the taking of four separate profits at four separate stages is calculated unduly to increase the cost of building materials and, consequently, the cost of building?

I think that was covered in the answer to the previous question.
