Vol. 125 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Mayo Level Crossing.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware of the fact that a very dangerous level crossing is situated on the railway line at Garryduff, Ballindine, County Mayo; and, if so, whether he will request Córas Iompair Éireann to have proper gates and a gate-keeper installed at this crossing.

I am informed by Córas Iompair Éireann that the crossing in question was originally provided as an accommodation or farmers' crossing for the convenience of a number of families. The by-road through the crossing was extended some years ago by the local authorities in order to link up the Ballyhaunis and Ballinrobe main roads.

The crossing is equipped with 9 feet wide gates on each side of the line. I understand that Córas Iompair Éireann are not under any statutory obligation to provide attendance at the gates and I have no power to require them to do so. The board have, however, informed me that additional warning signs and whistle notices to drivers are at present being prepared in their workshops for erection at the approaches to the crossing.
