Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Post Office Wages.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will indicate (1) the weekly rates of wages paid to temporary and permanent labourers employed by the engineering branch of the Post Office (a) in the Cork borough, (b) in the area immediately outside the borough; (2) the weekly rates of wages of permanent and temporary postmen in the same area.

The information requested in this question is given in the form of a tabular statement which, with the Ceann Comhairle's permission, will be circulated to the Deputy and inserted in the records of the House.

WAGES OF LABOURERS AND POSTMEN EMPLOYED IN CORK COUNTY BOROUGH AND ITS VICINITY.

GRADE

Wages payable in Cork County Borough

Wages payable in area adjoining County Borough

Quasi-permanent labourers

100s. per 44-hour working week

100s. per 44-hour working week.

Casual Labourers

108s. 6d. per 47-hour working week.

No Casual Labourers employed in 12 months ended 30/4/1951. Had any been employed they would have been paid at 96s. per 48-hour week if recruited in the County Borough area and at 75s. 6d. per 48-hour week if recruited outside the County Borough.

Permanent Postmen (full-time).

Scale of 63s. 5d. by increments to 111s. 9d. per week.

Scale of 61s. 4d. by increments to 105s. per week

Temporary Postmen (full-time).

Scale of 57s. 6d. by increments to 89s. 9d. per week.

Scale of 52s. 9d. by increments to 86s. per week.

NOTE.—A small number of post- men attached to Cork Head Post Office cross the County Borough Boundary in the course of their duties; they are paid the City rates of wages.
