Vol. 126 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bacon Curers' Profits.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that the last account of one firm of bacon curers shows an increase in profit of approximately 250 per cent. over the profit of the preceding year and if he has satisfied himself that such profits were reasonable in all the circumstances; and, if not, what action he proposes to take in reference to the matter.

I am not aware of the identity of the firm to which the Deputy refers but if he furnishes particulars to my Department I will look into the matter further. I should point out, however, that bacon prices were decontrolled in August, 1949 and control was not reimposed again until January of this year.

Particulars are in the R.G.D.A.T.A. Review.

In that case I should point out to the Deputy that the firm in question is engaged in many other activities and that bacon curing is a small part of its activities.

It is getting on fairly well anyway.
