Vol. 126 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - North Strand Bombing.

asked the Minister for Finance if he has seen the statements by Mr. Winston Churchill and others that the German war planes that bombed the North Strand area of Dublin were deliberately diverted from England to Ireland and if, in view of the information now available, he will consider requesting the British Government to pay the compensation which Germany undertook to pay but is unlikely to pay.

I am aware of the statements the Deputy has in mind, though I have not seen any reference to deliberate diversion of German war planes to Ireland. While it may be that the bombing referred to resulted indirectly from Britain's defensive measures, the fact remains it was actually done by German aircraft and Germany undertook to pay compensation for the damage caused. Although this undertaking has not so far been implemented, it has not been repudiated. The matter was the subject of discussion with members of a German delegation recently in Dublin and I am awaiting further developments.
