Vol. 127 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Síochána Recruiting.

Mr. Byrne

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state if the cause of the failure to recruit an adequate number of new recruits for membership of the Garda Síochána is due to the inadequate pay and slow promotion in the force and if he is aware of the extra duties involving longer hours and harder work for the present members of the Garda due to the inadequacy of the numbers serving in the City of Dublin; and, if so, what steps he intends taking to increase recruitment.

Recruiting for the Garda Síochána was stopped by the Government in April, 1948. It has been decided to reopen recruiting in the near future and a notice calling for candidates will be issued shortly.
