Vol. 127 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Adviser to Minister for Social Welfare.

Mr. O'Higgins

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will state in regard to the position of Adviser to the Minister for Social Welfare the reasons for the establishment of the position.

I considered it desirable to have such an adviser on the staff of my Department.

Mr. O'Higgins

I should like to know from the Minister why, in view of the fact that there has been since the Department was established, a secretary, a secretarial staff and a staff of civil servants, an addition to these staffs of an adviser to the Minister has been decided on? Surely the House is entitled to know the reasons?

I have given the reason. I do not know what the Deputy wants more than that. I considered an adviser for a certain part of the work of the Department was necessary if a suitable person could be got and I consider I got such a suitable person.

Mr. O'Higgins

Would the Minister say what duties are discharged by the adviser?

The principal duty is to prepare certain legislation that is contemplated.

Mr. O'Higgins

Will the Minister say——

Question No. 44.

Mr. O'Higgins

With your permission, a Chinn Chomhairle, I should like to raise this matter on the Adjournment.

I shall consider that.
