Vol. 127 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Electricity Supply Board Employment—Ballyshannon.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will request the Electricity Supply Board to give preference to local people in the filling of permanent positions on their staff in the town of Ballyshannon.

The arrangements for the appointment of staff in the service of the Electricity Supply Board rest entirely with the board and I have no function in connection with them.

Is the Minister aware that we have a very acute unemployment problem at the moment in Ballyshannon and that skilled labour is being imported into the town despite the fact that we have a superabundance of that particular class of skilled labour in the town? Some gentlemen have been imported into the town who are actually deserters from a foreign army.

I have every sympathy with the point of view expressed by the Deputy, but it is a matter entirely for the board.
