Vol. 127 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Markets for Surplus Small Cattle.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he has explored the possibility of getting markets for our surplus small cattle; and, if so, what action he proposes to take in the matter.

Mr. Walsh

There are considerable export markets for fat cattle and carcase beef in Great Britain and elsewhere and also for store cattle in Great Britain. Small cattle are not, however, generally in best demand for these markets, especially in a season such as the present one, which began late, but it is hoped that efforts now being made to develop additional export outlets for light carcase beef in Western European countries will prove successful.

Will the Minister take steps to ensure that we get credit for the cattle which we export to Britain and see that such cattle are exported through our own ports and not through the Six Counties?
