Vol. 127 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wages of Weavers.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that Gaeltarra Éireann pay their weavers a minimum wage of merely £3 per week and a maximum wage of £5 per week of 66½ hours; and, if so, if he will take immediate steps to remedy this position by increasing the piece-rate wage paid by 6d. per yard to all weavers.

The position is not as stated by the Deputy. The weavers in question are paid on piece rates which vary according to the type of material being woven. Neither minimum nor maximum wage rates apply to them and, in the case of outdoor weavers, the number of hours worked is a matter for themselves. The hours worked by indoor weavers are regulated in accordance with the provisions of the Conditions of Employment Act.
