Vol. 127 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Lucan Unemployment.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce what steps he proposes to take to relieve unemployment in the Lucan district amongst employees of the local woollen mills.

When it became evident that the temporary decline in clothing sales, coupled with the existence in the hands of merchants of exceptionally heavy stocks accumulated for stockpiling purposes under the facilities afforded earlier in the year, were likely to affect employment in the woollen and worsted mills, steps to correct the position were immediately taken by curtailing the quantity of woollen and worsted cloth permitted to be imported in the current quota period, and by reimposing the tariff on imported woollen and worsted yarns. The question of what further measures might be taken to improve the position is, at present, under consideration.
