Vol. 127 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Portlaoighise Unemployment.

Mr. O'Higgins

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware that there is considerable unemployment in the town of Portlaoighise; and, if so, what steps will be taken to relieve the situation.

As the Deputy is no doubt aware, employment schemes are intended to provide employment for men who are applicants for unemployment assistance.

A grant proportionate to the number of unemployment assistance recipients in the area has been allocated to Portlaoighise.

Mr. O'Higgins

I wonder would the Parliamentary Secretary mind saying when that grant was allocated?

It was allocated recently.

Mr. O'Higgins

The only reason I ask the question is that I am informed there is a recent local unemployment problem there. Has that been dealt with?

The unemployment problem there on the 21st November, 1951, was 16 men registered in receipt of unemployment assistance in the Portlaoighise area.
