Vol. 128 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Drainage of River Rye.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the reason for the delay in completing the sinking and drainage of the River Rye which continually floods large tracts of land in the vicinity of Kilcock and Ferranslaigh between Counties Meath and Kildare; if he is aware that a minor scheme which was in progress was held up for want of better machinery, and if, in view of the urgency of the scheme, he will state when operations will again commence.

I am not aware of any scheme for the River Rye being held up for want of better machinery. As I stated in reply to a question by Deputy Sweetman last week, the Commissioners of Public Works, at the request of the Department of Agriculture, have recently completed an engineering survey of the river for the purposes of the Land Reclamation Act, 1949, and the results of the survey are under consideration.

Is it not so that the mouth of the Rye where it enters the Liffey is a rock shoal? Is the delay in the Board of Works in dealing with that rock shoal problem at the mouth due to an insufficiency of machinery suitable for that work?

Not at all. The survey has only recently been completed and it is under examination.

Am I to understand that the Parliamentary Secretary is now doing for a river in Kildare what he cannot do for the River Moy?

That is a separate question.

That is a different-question.

It is a wangle.
